The Perfect French Press:
Step by Step
The French Press is one of the oldest, simplest, and most rewarding ways to brew coffee — yet most people have never learned to do it properly.
No fancy machines. No paper filters stealing your flavor. Just hot water, great coffee, and four minutes of patience. Once you master this method, you'll wonder why you ever brewed any other way. Here's everything you need to know to get a perfect cup every single time.

Grind size makes or breaks your French Press. You want a coarse grind — think rough sea salt or coarse ground pepper. Too fine and your coffee will be gritty, bitter, and over-extracted. Too coarse and it'll taste weak and flat. If you're buying pre-ground, ask for "French Press grind" and any good coffee shop will know exactly what you need.
7 Steps to the Perfect Cup
Preheat Your French Press
Pour a small amount of hot water into the empty French Press, swirl it around, and discard. This preheating step keeps your brew temperature stable from the first pour to the last sip — a small step that makes a noticeable difference in flavor.
Measure Your Coffee
Add your coarsely ground coffee to the French Press. The golden ratio is 1 gram of coffee per 15ml of water — or about 1 heaping tablespoon per 4oz of water if you don't have a scale. See the ratio guide below to find the right amount for your press size.
The Bloom Pour
Start your timer and pour just enough hot water (200°F) to saturate all the grounds — about twice the weight of your coffee. You'll see the grounds "bloom" and puff up as trapped CO₂ gases release. This is a sign of fresh coffee doing exactly what it should.
Pour & Stir
After the 30-second bloom, pour the remaining hot water in a slow, steady circular motion until you reach your target amount. Once poured, give the grounds a gentle stir to ensure everything is fully saturated and there are no dry pockets hiding at the top.
Place the Lid & Steep
Place the lid on top with the plunger pulled all the way up — do not press yet. This traps the heat and lets the coffee steep undisturbed. Set your timer for 4 minutes. Resist the urge to peek, stir, or press early. This is where the magic happens.
Press Slowly
When your timer goes off, press the plunger down with slow, steady, even pressure. It should take about 20–30 seconds to press fully. If it's too easy to press, your grind is too coarse. If it feels like you're fighting it, your grind is too fine. A little resistance is perfect.
Pour Immediately & Enjoy
Pour your coffee into your cup right away — don't let it sit in the French Press after pressing. The grounds are still in contact with the liquid and will continue to extract, turning your perfect cup bitter within minutes. Pour, add your sweetener or milk if desired, and savor every sip.

When Things Go Wrong
My coffee tastes bitter
Your coffee is over-extracted. Try coarser grind, shorter steep time (3.5 min), or cooler water. Also make sure you're pouring immediately after pressing.
My coffee tastes weak or sour
Your coffee is under-extracted. Try finer grind, longer steep (4.5 min), hotter water, or more coffee. Sour usually means not enough extraction time.
My cup is full of grit
Your grind is too fine. Switch to a coarser grind and press more slowly and steadily. Some sediment is normal — grit means the filter isn't catching everything.
The plunger is hard to push
Your grind is too fine. Coarsen your grind and try again. Forcing it will push bitter sediment through the filter and into your cup — always press slow and steady.
